For our Space theme, I make name tags for each student to wear. Instead of their actual name, I write the name of and draw a picture of a planet or space object on their tag. For the remainder of the day, I call the students by their space name. Each day I give the students a different space name so that by the end of the week, they have been introduced to several planets or space objects.
In our Block Center, students can build rocket ships or planets.
In the Dramatic Play Center, students can pretend to be astronauts or aliens.
In the Math or Science Center, students can measure and weigh rocks and planets and compare and contrast the planets.
In the Writing Center, word cards are laid out for the planets and different space objects and children write about their favorite one.
In the Sensory/Fine Motor Center, a sensory box is filled with black beans, rocks, and stars. Children play and explore. A toy rocket and some astronauts can also be added.
In the Art Center, shape cut-outs are laid out and children are allowed to create a planet and/or a rocket. They can also create name rockets where each letter of their name is a booster on the rocket, placed in order.
The following books can be placed in the Reading Center:
*"The Three Little Aliens and the Big Bad Robot"
*"Aliens Love Underpants"
*"On the Launch Pad"
*"The Moon"
*"ABC Universe"
*"Roaring Rocket"
